  Courses are scheduled on a demand basis.  
  If you are interested in any of the courses outlined, please contact the Training Office at 442-0120 or register on-line as soon as possible as all courses are filled on a first come, first served basis and course seats are limited.  Only union members may enroll online, all other inquiries must be made through the training centre at 442-0120.

Isometric Spool Interpretation/Fabrication Course
Involves the understanding of blueprints, spool sheets, P& ID drawings.   This course is 40 hours and is a prerequisite for the Steamfitting course.

  Introduction to Pipefitting
This course is designed for members who wish to enhance their pipefitting skills. Topics will include math, tools, plan reading, piping materials and various pipe joining methods. Students will learn how to correctly prepare steel pipe and fittings for various welded joints, such as socket welds, butt welds, and saddles.

  Steamfitting/Pipefitting (In progress)

This course is for members who wish to challenge the Inter-Provincial Steamfitting exam.  Applicants must have 12,000 hours of Steamfitting experience.  Course duration is approximately 120 hours.  Please note: the Isometric Spool Interpretation Fabrication course must be completed prior to the Steamfitting / Pipefitting course.

Inter-Provincial Red Seal Welding Certification
Applicants must have 7200 hours employment in the welding trade. Course duration is 140 hours.

Tig Upgrade
This course is designed to upgrade the skills of our new welders in Tig Welding.  As a prerequisite all students must hold a valid NS Department of Labour Welding ticket.  Course duration is approximately 50 hours.

  Submerged Arc & Wirefeed
This course is designed to train welders on submerged arc & wire feed equipment primarily used in fabrication shops.

Brazing & Silfos
This course offers students theory and practical training and will include the opportunity to test for a NS Department of Labour ticket.

G-9 Gas       (In Progress)
At the end of this 60 hour course each student will write the G-9 Gas exam. You must be a Journeyperson in the Plumbing or Steamfitting trade to be eligible for this course.

Gas Tech III   
Students must have 600 hours prior experience in the gas industry in order to be eligible for this course. This course will cover CSA modules 1-9 with a practical and written exam upon completion. Course consists of online and instructor led training.

Gas Tech II
Students must have 2,000 hours prior experience in the gas industry to be eligible for this course. This course will cover CSA modules 10-25 with a practical and written exam upon completion. Course consists of online and instructor led training.

Gas Tech I
Students must have 4,000 hours prior experience in the gas industry to be eligible for this course. This course will cover CSA modules 26-31 with a written exam upon completion. Course consists of online and instructor led training.

Basic Electricity
This 25 - 30 hour course covers motors and low voltage wiring of boilers and related equipment. In addition, students will learn how to read and understand basic to advanced wiring diagrams.

Variable Frequency Drives
Students will learn fundamentals of S.C.R & I.G.B.T. technology, concepts of how drives operate, benefits of power reduction, plus motor control, and learn how to install plus program drives. Course duration is approx. 30 hrs.

Efficiency Testing Equipment Course
This 4 hour course will cover all types of gas equipment and is put on by T.P.J Instrumentation.

Modern Hydronic Heating 
This course will cover topics such as in
-floor, solar, geothermal, gas & electric boilers and their controls. Course duration is approx. 16 hrs.

Centrifugal Pump and Seal Replacement
Students will learn basic pump theory and how to replace seals in a pump. Course duration is approx. 9 hours.

Medical Gas- This 30 hour course will cover the new CSA regulations pertaining to the installation of medical gas piping systems and equipment. A certificate of completion will be awarded to those students who successfully complete the course

Plumbing Code Update
This course will cover changes to the 2010 National Plumbing Code and is approx. 18 hrs long.

Residential Plumbing
Students will receive classroom instruction on drawings and basic plumbing code applications. A practical component where participants will get hands on experience installing complete residential systems.  This course is designed for Journeyman and Apprentices interested in working in the single and multi storey residential market. Course duration is approx. 60 hrs.

Cross Connection Control Testers Course
This course will cover all types of backflow assemblies and their uses. Upon course completion students will write the AWWA Cross Connection Control Testers examination.  Course duration is approx. 42 hrs.

Cross Connection Control Re-Certification (In Progress)
AWWA Cross Connection Control Testers must be recertified every five years.  This course provides the opportunity to update cross connection control knowledge and skills and then to write the required examination for re-certification. Course duration is 15 hrs.

This 40 hour course is designed to help apprentices improve their knowledge and skills in mathematics.

Heritage Course 
This course is compulsory for all new members. Students will learn the history of unionism and their responsibility as union members.

Industrial Rigging
This 40 hour course will include theoretical and practical training covering the best rigging practices, calculating centers of gravity, sling stress, crane set up and the use of tuggers, jacks and rollers. Students will be required to pass a written and practical test to receive a certificate.

Foreman Certification
This 40 hour course is designed to provide journeypersons the necessary entry level training required to move into supervisory roles in the union construction industry. Experienced foreman and members who are interested in foreman positions may apply.

Computer Courses

Introduction to Computers
Students will learn the skills and concepts necessary to start using a computer, to get around the Windows environment and to use the terminology.

Intermediate Computers
This course advances knowledge learned in Introduction to Computers.  Many topics are the same, however, they are at a more advanced level.

Introduction to Excel Level l
Students will learn the skills and concepts necessary to start using  Microsoft Excel,  to get around the Windows environment and to use the terminology.

Introduction to Microsoft Word Level l
Students will learn the skills and concepts necessary to create a Microsoft Word document.

Introduction to E-Mail
Students will learn the skills and concepts necessary  to create and use e-mail.

Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint Level l
Students will learn the skills and concepts necessary create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.

Better Supervision
This course is offered by the NS Construction Sector Council and is designed to assist supervisors in areas such as leadership, planning, Labour Relations, productivity and quality. Course duration is 54 hours.

Sprinkler System Installer
It is important to register for technical training as soon as possible as seats are assigned on a first-come basis. Please note that your training enrolment form and deposit ($81.18) must be received by June 18th, 2010 deadline for courses starting September to December 2010, and by October 1st, 2010 for all courses starting January to June 2011.
